When we are tense, stressed or anxious we often find our breath tends to become more shallow & focused in the upper part of the body. Being stressed activates our sympathetic nervous system, increases the blood flow to our vital organs & reduces the flow to our brains. This is why when we are stressed it often difficult to think clearly. When we breathe deeply we can help activate our parasympathetic nervous system which initiates the relaxation response in our bodies. It allows more blood to flow to our extremities & to our brains so as we relax it become easier to think clearer. If we can teach ourselves to breathe deeply we can learn to use it to find calm in times of stress & generally live in a more relaxed way releasing tension from our bodies & minds.
